Almost all of the staff were outstanding with the exception of the one "old grouchy" bartender who was rude, dismissive and not very cordial or welcoming at all.

19 Accent Wall Ideas That Wow

If you have panels, then utilize them by creating a design feature trio with wallpaper. Make sure you choose a paint color that matches a main color from the design to bring the walls together visually. If you pick a large scale design like this one the results will be stunning, just remember to keep the rest of the scheme simple so the wall decor takes pride of place. For a minimalist look, a simple black-and-white drawing adds a graphic touch to a bedroom. It’s an approach that works well for various styles, whether styled cohesively in a simple space or juxtaposed in a maximalist bedroom.

Overcrowding shelves is one of the common open shelving mistakes I see people make, but there are lots of ways to get around this, such as making several groups or 'vignettes' of items. Use stylish bookends to make books easier to group together, while adding another element of texture and color. Generally, if the goal is to make a home look expensive, we want to borrow elements from the 'quiet luxury' trend and make the shelves look like they are part of the room's architecture. They need to look like they have always been there, and there should also be a sense that not everything the client owns is out on display.

Bedroom Wall Decor Ideas: Utilize the Space You Have

Led by Kara Smith, KES Studio is a boutique atelier that offers innovative and smart interior design and lifestyle services for design-forward residential clients and one-of-a-kind hospitality environments. Whether it’s from travel, art, and even her clients, Kara is constantly drawing inspiration to create cutting-edge designs. This playful wallcovering with repeating cranes brings in a bright coastal feeling.

Camouflage a TV in Style

You don’t need to go over the top to achieve a fantastic bedroom wall design, as this simple bedroom wall decor proves. The entire room is done up in crisp black and white, with theatre being added by an inky blue wall. Bedroom decoration in this image has notes of starry nights with deep blue skies and shimmering white stars. The wall decor design is cleverly carried onto the first panel of wardrobe to mirror the effect of the narrow wall area also painted blue on the opposite side of the room. This trick creates a sense of depth to the room and is visually quite pleasing.

Create a focal point in the powder bathroom

Adding a mirror to your bedroom is practical, but it’s also a smart way to layer light into the space while simultaneously making a room feel bigger. (The larger the mirror, the more the light will bounce around the space.) For a crisp look, choose a simple frame. Instead of a striking accent wall, go bright everywhere besides the accent wall. Here, architecture-firm Arterberry Cooke pairs aqua blue walls with white wood paneling on a single wall.

Extra-Tall Headboard

When you fall in love with an energetic wallpaper or trendy paint color, it's exciting to incorporate them into your home. Committing to an entire room of intricate patterns or vibrants hues can feel intimidating. The perfect way to experiment is with a bedroom accent wall, where you pick one spot to put your style on full display.

You can use a similar layout with pictures that speak to you and create a grammable look. While having wallpaper with a floral pattern is a bedroom wall decor idea you cannot go wrong with. Take a more unconventional route by putting up rosette flowers on the bedroom wall. This bedroom keeps it simple with a set of rosette flowers decorating the space above the headboard. Especially if you have a large headboard, arranging framed artwork above your nightstands can spotlight your bed beautifully. The simple black and white art in this space plays well off the matching bedding. Colorful bedrooms can still feel tranquil and balanced, especially when leaning into calming greens and blues. Notice how the artwork pulls in green to complement the botanical wallpaper, but then adds in a pop of welcomed blue for a more dynamic moment. If you’re up for a reno, you can completely elevate your bedroom with a DIY built-in headboard (see our designer’s tutorial here). It can run wider than your nightstands or the full width of the wall to add dimension and color to your bedroom.

But regardless of your choice, there is another key factor to bear in mind – color. If you’re dealing with a large, blank wall in a spacious main bedroom, consider a gallery wall above a bed, dresser, or vanity to efficiently fill up space. We love the asymmetric yet balanced look of the above vignette — while the frames and layout feel mis-matched, the color palette and photography style ties the look together. Add some texture to your bedroom walls with the help of woven wall decor. These baskets, for instance, bring some welcome contrast and warmth to this bedroom.

You’ve seen it in bathroom renovations left and right over the past few years. The luxury living rooms we see online always have carefully decorated shelves with plenty of empty space. So, give decorative pieces room to breathe by leaving a couple of inches of extra space between the shelves.

Whether you want a classic coastal look or one of its creative branches, you're going to find the bedroom inspiration you need below. Keep scrolling to see coastal bedroom designs that will make your room feel like summer all year long. From painting the walls to adding a new headboard or upgrading rugs and lighting, there are plenty of ways to elevate a spacious primary suite with an adjoining bathroom or a small and cozy main bedroom.

Randomized Block ANOVA

block design in statistics

First, the blocking variable should have an effect on the dependent variable. Just like in the example above, driving experience has an impact on driving ability. This is why we picked this particular variable as the blocking variable in the first place. Even though we are not interested in the blocking variable, we know based on the theoretical and/or empirical evidence that the blocking variable has an impact on the dependent variable.

Significance Level

The general linear test is the most powerful test for this type of situation with unbalanced data. Then, under the null hypothesis of no treatment effect, the ratio of the mean square for treatments to the error mean square is an F statistic that is used to test the hypothesis of equal treatment means. In some disciplines, each block is called an experiment (because a copy of the entire experiment is in the block) but in statistics, we call the block to be a replicate. This is a matter of scientific jargon, the design and analysis of the study is an RCBD in both cases.

Example 8-10: Rice Data (Experimental Design)

In the previous example, gender was a known nuisance variable that researchers knew affected weight loss. By placing the individuals into blocks, the relationship between the new diet and weight loss became more clear since we were able to control for the nuisance variable of gender. No major is complete without encountering the fields that interface closely with statistics. The minor is for students who want to study a significant amount of statistics and probability at the upper division level. For information regarding the requirements, please see the Minor Requirements tab on this page. Since the first three columns contain some pairs more than once, let's try columns 1, 2, and now we need a third...how about the fourth column.

block design in statistics

1 - Blocking Scenarios

In this experiment, we are interested in contrasting the plates on the same patients, not the patients themselves. The ten plates are then the treatment factor levels, and each patient is a block to which we assign plates. Since \(\lambda\) is not an integer there does not exist a balanced incomplete block design for this experiment. Seeing as how the block size in this case is fixed, we can achieve a balanced complete block design by adding more replicates so that \(\lambda\) equals at least 1. It needs to be a whole number in order for the design to be balanced. It looks like day of the week could affect the treatments and introduce bias into the treatment effects, since not all treatments occur on Monday.

They have four different dosages they want to try and enough experimental wafers from the same lot to run three wafers at each of the dosages.

About this unit

By adding it into the model, we reduce its likelihood to confound the effect of the treatment (independent variable) on the dependent variable. If the blocking variable (or the groupings of the block) has little effect on the dependent variable, the results will be biased and inaccurate. We are less likely to detect an effect of the treatment on the outcome variable if there is one. By extension, note that the trials for any K-factor randomized block design are simply the cell indices of a k dimensional matrix. In some scenarios, however, it is necessary to use more than one replicate of each treatment per block.

This re-purposes the original experimental unit factor as the blocking factor and introduces a new factor ‘below,’ but requires that we now randomize Drug on (Sample) to obtain an RCBD and not pseudo-replication. Furthermore, as mentioned early, researchers have to decide how many blocks should there be, once you have selected the blocking variable. In the case of driving experience as a blocking variable, are three groups sufficient? Can we reasonably believe that seasoned drivers are more similar to each other than they are to those with intermediate or little driving experience?

3.7 Reference Designs

The first replicate would occur during the first week, the second replicate would occur during the second week, etc. Week one would be replication one, week two would be replication two and week three would be replication three. If this point is missing we can substitute x, calculate the sum of squares residuals, and solve for x which minimizes the error and gives us a point based on all the other data and the two-way model.

Assign treatments to blocks

However, what if the treatment they were first given was a really bad treatment? In fact in this experiment the diet A consisted of only roughage, so, the cow's health might in fact deteriorate as a result of this treatment. This carryover would hurt the second treatment if the washout period isn't long enough. The measurement at this point is a direct reflection of treatment B but may also have some influence from the previous treatment, treatment A.

We have not randomized these, although you would want to do that, and we do show the third square different from the rest. The row effect is the order of treatment, whether A is done first or second or whether B is done first or second. So, if we have 10 subjects we could label all 10 of the subjects as we have above, or we could label the subjects 1 and 2 nested in a square. This is similar to the situation where we have replicated Latin squares - in this case five reps of 2 × 2 Latin squares, just as was shown previously in Case 2. We want to account for all three of the blocking factor sources of variation, and remove each of these sources of error from the experiment.

The drugs are then randomized on the intersection of litters and cages (i.e., on mice) such that each drug occurs once in each cage and once in each litter. The most important example is the balanced incomplete block design (BIBD), where each pair of treatments is allocated to the same number of blocks, and so are therefore all individual treatments. This specific type of balance ensures that pair-wise contrasts are all estimated with the same precision, but precision decreases if more than two treatment groups are compared.

Two classic designs with crossed blocks are latin squares and Youden squares. This type of design can be extended to an arbitrary number of nested blocks and we might use two labs, two cages per lab, and two litters per cage for our example. As long as each nested factor is replicated, we are able to estimate corresponding variance components. If a factor is not replicated (e.g., we use a single litter per lab), then there are no degrees of freedom for the nested blocking factor, and the effects of both blocking factors are completely confounded. Effectively, such a design uses a single blocking factor, where each level is a combination of lab and litter. The dependence of the block- and treatment factors must be considered for fixed block effects.

Often in medical studies, the blocking factor used is the type of institution. Sometimes several sources of variation are combined to define the block, so the block becomes an aggregate variable. Consider a scenario where we want to test various subjects with different treatments.

Notice that in our block level, there is no p-value to assess if the blocks are different. So our analysis respects that blocks are present, but does not attempt any statistical analyses on them. Fortunately in this case, we don’t care about the blocking variable and including it in the model was simply guarding us in case there was a difference, but I wasn’t interested in estimating it. If the only covariate we care about is the most deeply nested effect, then we can do the usual analysis and recognize the p-value for the blocking variable is nonsense, and we don’t care about it.

You can obtain the 'least squares means' from the estimated parameters from the least squares fit of the model. My guess is that they all started the experiment at the same time - in this case, the first model would have been appropriate. The following crossover design, is based on two orthogonal Latin squares. Here is a plot of the least squares means for Yield with the missing data, not very different. Above you have the least squares means that correspond exactly to the simple means from the earlier analysis.

Chapter 5 Complete Block Designs ANOVA and Mixed Models

block design in statistics

We also consider extensions when more than a single blocking factor exists which takes us to Latin Squares and their generalizations. When we can utilize these ideal designs, which have nice simple structure, the analysis is still very simple, and the designs are quite efficient in terms of power and reducing the error variation. We cannot test the interaction factor and therefore require a non-statistical argument to justify ignoring the interaction. Since we have full control over which property we use for blocking the experimental units, we can often employ subject-matter knowledge to exclude interactions between our chosen blocking factor and the treatment factor. In our particular case, for example, it seems unlikely that the litter affects drugs differently, which justifies treating the litter-by-drug interaction as negligible.

Blocking (statistics)

Students interested in teaching statistics and mathematics in middle or high school should pursue the teaching option within the major. Students interested in teaching should also consider the Cal Teach Program. To achieve replicates, this design could be replicated several times.

2.3 Contrasts

When the data are complete this analysis from GLM is correct and equivalent to the results from the two-way command in Minitab. What if the missing data point were from a very high measuring block? It would reduce the overall effect of that treatment, and the estimated treatment mean would be biased. Basic residual plots indicate that normality, constant variance assumptions are satisfied. Therefore, there seems to be no obvious problems with randomization. These plots provide more information about the constant variance assumption, and can reveal possible outliers.

Probability for Data Science

block design in statistics

To this end, we arrange (or block) mice into groups of three and randomize the drugs separately within each group, such that each drug occurs once per group. Ideally, the variance between animals in the same group is much smaller than between animals in different groups. A common choice for blocking mice is by litter, since sibling mice often show more similar responses as compared to mice from different litters (Perrin 2014). Litter sizes are typically in the range of 5–7 animals in mice (Watt 1934), which would easily allow us to select three mice from each litter for our experiment. Latin Square Designs are probably not used as much as they should be - they are very efficient designs. In other words, these designs are used to simultaneously control (or eliminate) two sources of nuisance variability.

Assign treatments to blocks

It typically deteriorates if the block size becomes too large, since experimental units then become more heterogeneous. A balanced incomplete block design allows blocking of simple treatment structures if only a subset of treatments can be accommodated in each block. The latin square design requires identical number of levels for the row and column factors.

Statistical Methods II

We can determine whether cell phone use has an effet on driving ability after controlling for driving experience. In randomized block design, the control technique is done through the design itself. First the researchers need to identify a potential control variable that most likely has an effect on the dependent variable. Researchers will group participants who are similar on this control variable together into blocks. This control variable is called a blocking variable in the randomized block design. The purpose of the randomized block design is to form groups that are homogeneous on the blocking variable, and thus can be compared with each other based on the independent variable.

What else is there about BIBD?

Each block then contains one full replicate of the factorial design, and the required block size rapidly increases with the number of factors and factor levels. In practice, only smaller factorials can be blocked by this method since heterogeneity between experimental units often increases with block size, diminishing the advantages of blocking. We discuss more sophisticated designs for blocking factorials that overcome this problem by using only a fraction of all treatment combinations per block in Chapter 9. Finally, we might use the same row and column factor levels in each replicate.

Missing Data

To improve the precision of treatment comparisons, we can reduce variability among the experimental units. We can group experimental units into blocks so that each block contains relatively homogeneous units. However it would be pretty sloppy to not do the analysis correctly because our blocking variable might be something we care about.

Use the viewlet below to walk through an initial analysis of the data (cow_diets.mwx | cow_diets.csv) for this experiment with cow diets. In this Latin Square we have each treatment occurring in each period. Even though Latin Square guarantees that treatment A occurs once in the first, second and third period, we don't have all sequences represented. It is important to have all sequences represented when doing clinical trials with drugs. If we only have two treatments, we will want to balance the experiment so that half the subjects get treatment A first, and the other half get treatment B first.

I have a Master of Science degree in Applied Statistics and I’ve worked on machine learning algorithms for professional businesses in both healthcare and retail. I’m passionate about statistics, machine learning, and data visualization and I created Statology to be a resource for both students and teachers alike. My goal with this site is to help you learn statistics through using simple terms, plenty of real-world examples, and helpful illustrations. Unfortunately nuisance variables often arise in experimental studies, which are variables that effect the relationship between the explanatory and response variable but are of no interest to researchers. In the first example provided above, the sex of the patient would be a nuisance variable.

In an RCBD, we can estimate any treatment contrast and all effects independently within each block, and then average over blocks. We can use the same intra-block analysis for a BIBD by estimating contrasts and effects based on those blocks that contain sufficient information and averaging over these blocks. We can see in the table below that the other blocking factor, cow, is also highly significant. The degrees of freedom for error grows very rapidly when you replicate Latin squares. But usually if you are using a Latin Square then you are probably not worried too much about this error.

With missing data or IBDs that are not orthogonal, even BIBD where orthogonality does not exist, the analysis requires us to use GLM which codes the data like we did previously. For an odd number of treatments, e.g. 3, 5, 7, etc., it requires two orthogonal Latin squares in order to achieve this level of balance. For even number of treatments, 4, 6, etc., you can accomplish this with a single square. This form of balance is denoted balanced for carryover (or residual) effects. For instance, we might do this experiment all in the same factory using the same machines and the same operators for these machines.

Almost no one responded, either to confirm or to deny. A social media post accuses unnamed North Carolina lawmakers of drunk and disorderly behavior at a bourbon-tasting event in Kentucky. Thousands of U.S. deaths per year could be prevented if people followed the government's dietary guidelines, which advise men to limit themselves to two drinks or fewer per day and women to one drink or fewer per day, Naimi said.

That idea came from imperfect studies comparing groups of people by how much they drink. Usually, consumption was measured at one point in time. The lawsuit accuses Chidester of gross negligence, alleging she drove into the north wall of the boat club fast enough to enter about 25 feet inside the building until her car stopped. Monroe County prosecutor Jeffery Yorkey said in court that a preliminary alcohol breath test was "significantly over the legal limit" but did not specify what the results were. Colovos said he is still waiting on a medical report that would determine his client's blood-alcohol level around the time of the crash. Bill Colovos, Chidester's attorney, argued in court that his client suffers from "epileptic-type seizures" in her legs and that she only had one glass of wine the day of the crash. A Michigan woman facing eight charges stemming from a crash that killed two children at a boat club was released Thursday on a $1.5 million bond, according to the jail and her attorney. "This must have been a terrifying incident for those concerned," police said. “The simple message that’s best supported by the evidence is that, if you drink, less is better when it comes to health,” Naimi said. Naimi served on an advisory committee that wanted to lower the recommendation for men to one drink per day.

They were on a “Bourbon Trail tour,” visiting several tasting rooms, according to the poster. The scene was described Saturday in a post on Reddit by a person who says they work at a bourbon distillery in the Louisville area. The distillery was the site of a private tasting event Friday night for a tour bus full of North Carolina lawmakers and lobbyists.

Costa Concordia: Ten years on pianist recalls terrifying escape from the capsized cruise liner

"I felt like (my daughters) were going to get trampled, and putting my arms around them and just holding them together and letting the sea of people go by us." His firm, part of the US Carnival group, returned to the ocean again last September, limiting calls to Italian ports, only to suspend operations again in December. "A year and a half without going anywhere is a long time. It was about time we set off again for the sea, the atmosphere, the views. We've been missing all that," said Jean-Pierre Faux, a 74-year-old pensioner from Belgium holidaying with his wife Martine.

“I imagine it like a nail stuck to the wall that marks that date, as a before and after,” he said, recounting how he joined the rescue effort that night, helping pull ashore the dazed, injured and freezing passengers from lifeboats. “Every one of us here has a tragic memory from then,” said Mario Pellegrini, 59, who was deputy mayor in 2012 and was the first civilian to climb onto the cruise ship after it struck the rocks near the lighthouses at the port entrance. In a first step to prevent pollution of the shore and assist in a refloat the ship, its oil and fuel tanks were emptied. The flagship Costa Smeralda set off from the northwestern port of Savona at 6pm after being landbound since December 20, when the Italian government banned cruises during the holiday season due to the coronavirus crisis. They were hugely relieved when salvage workers on the island managed last year to successfully rotate the 114,500-ton ship into an upright position.

years later, Costa Concordia disaster vivid for survivors

Rescue teams searched for survivors and helicopters evacuated the last 50 people on the deck. Some people decided it was too difficult to get on to a lifeboat and chose to swim, with a number safely reaching the nearby island of Giglio. "It was difficult to walk. First it moved once, then to the left and then more on the right. The boat was tipping one side. You could see the ship was sinking more and more. In half an hour it sank halfway into the water," she said. This was the very beginning of my personal nightmare, because I had to perform a gruelling evacuation of the ship.

Wrecking Near the Shore

Eyewitnesses have described scenes of chaos on board the Italian cruise ship the Costa Concordia, which has run aground off Italy, killing at least five people. I was not alone of course, there was a bunch of between 35 to 40 people around me, passengers and crew members. Prosecutors blamed a delayed evacuation order and conflicting instructions given by crew for the chaos that ensued as passengers scrambled to get off the ship. The calamity caused changes in the cruise industry like carrying more lifejackets and holding emergency drills before leaving port. GIGLIO PORTO, Italy — The curvy granite rocks of the Tuscan island of Giglio lay bare in the winter sun, no longer hidden by the ominous, stricken cruise liner that ran aground in the turquoise waters of this marine sanctuary ten years ago. Following the conclusion of the righting operation, the ship was kept on the platform while further inspections were made and the starboard sponsons attached.

Elizabeth Nanni, of Isola del Giglio Tourist Information, said those who arrived on the island were survivors in a state of shock, ''desperate people looking for each other'' and people suffering from hypothermia after jumping into the sea. "We were on the same level as the water so some people started to swim because they weren't able to get on the lifeboats," said Mr Costa. When I got there I found myself with other crew members and passengers on this huge dancefloor. We were expecting some instructions, some kind of explanation, but the ship began to have multiple blackouts and power failures. There are going to be substantial risks before the Costa Concordia is gone for good, however.

On 13 January 2012, the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized off the coast of Tuscany after hitting a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea. "I imagine it like a nail stuck to the wall that marks that date, as a before and after," he said, recounting how he joined the rescue effort that night, helping pull ashore the dazed, injured and freezing passengers from lifeboats. It will also honour the 4,200 survivors and the residents of Giglio who took in passengers and crew, offering clothes and shelter until passengers could return to the mainland.

Costa Concordia Captain Found Guilty Of Manslaughter

He said it was an emotional moment for his client and that his going aboard the ship could help ascertain the facts. Thursday is the second inspection authorized by the court since the beginning of the year in an effort to determine whether any factors beyond human error contributed to the loss of life in the disaster. NPR's Sylvia Poggioli tells our Newscast unit that prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence of 26 years for the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino. Rose Metcalf, a dancer who had been performing on the ship, was one of the last people to be winched to safety by a helicopter after clinging to the stricken vessel. "Usually there are 700 people on the island at this time of year, so receiving 4,000 people in the middle of the night wasn't easy," she said.

Ananias and her family declined Costa’s initial $14,500 compensation offered to each passenger and sued Costa, a unit of US-based Carnival Corp., to try to cover the cost of their medical bills and therapy for the post-traumatic stress they have suffered. But after eight years in the US and then Italian court system, they lost their case. "For us islanders, when we remember some event, we always refer to whether it was before or after the Concordia," said Matteo Coppa, who was 23 and fishing on the jetty when the darkened Concordia listed toward shore and then collapsed onto its side in the water. "There was really a melee there is the best way to describe it," he told Cobiella. "It's very similar to the movie 'Titanic.' People were jumping onto the top of the lifeboats and pushing down women and children to try to get to them."

On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the ship began, and by the early hours of 17 September, the ship was set upright on her underwater cradle. In July 2014, the ship was refloated using sponsons (flotation tanks) welded to her sides, and was towed 320 kilometres (200 mi) to her home port of Genoa for scrapping, which was completed in July 2017. The MS Costa Concordia, the Italian cruise ship that killed 32 people when it sank off the coast off Isola del Giglio in 2012, has just been sitting off the Tuscan coast ever since.

The unprecedented salvage operation continues, and workers hope to re-float the ship in the next few months and then tow it away from Giglio. "Everybody was trying to get on the boats at the same time. When people had to get on the lifeboats they were pushing each other. It was a bit chaotic. We were trying to keep passengers calm but it was just impossible. Nobody knew what was going on." Monica, a German passenger who was in the cruise liner's theatre when the ship began to suffer problems, said it was hard to reach the lifeboats.

While the ship was tipping over I was confronted with a portrait of an ongoing tragedy, a grotesque paradox. But no one came from the bridge, and of course the ship, in the meantime, was still performing this very macabre choreography of slowly capsizing. It was really unexpected because the conditions at sea meant it made no sense for this to happen.

Specifically, experts will be examining an electrical generator in the ship's engine room and the bridge. Judge Giovanni Puliatti stressed that Schettino was being allowed onto the ship "as a defendant, not a consultant" and therefore that he could board the ship to help investigators, but not to ask questions. Mr Metcalf, from Dorset, told the BBC his daughter had phoned to say she was safe but that she had feared she would have to jump into the sea.

Rival MSC has carried some 60,000 passengers since it resumed some routes last August, breaking off over the Christmas period owing to Italian restrictions. "The crew has so been looking forward to this moment. Everyone was so enthusiastic at the thought of setting off once again. The ship is like a family to us," said skipper Pietro Sinisi from his position on the bridge. Passengers boarded a little hesitantly at first after completing their battery of health tests before settling down in the knowledge that they could finally begin their holiday. The Mediterranean voyage will last from three to seven days, depending on where it stops on the Italian coast - La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Naples, Messina or Cagliari. Residents are looking forward to that day, but a decision as to where the ship will be taken for scrapping is still pending. Another woman, who has lived on Giglio for 60 years, said Schettino should not bear the blame for the disaster alone.

Italian cruise line Costa Cruises took to the seas on Saturday for the first time in more than four months, buoying an industry capsized by the COVID-19 pandemic. I left the bar and found myself stumbling along sloping corridors with passengers and crew members. Francesco Schettino, the captain of the cruise liner, was jailed for 16 years for multiple manslaughter after the disaster that left 32 people dead.

With Giglio Island lying in a protected marine area, environmental issues relating to the Concordia wreck were of particular concern. The vessel was on the edge of an underwater cliff, leading to worries that the ship might slip and break apart, causing an oil spill. To lessen any potential damage, oil booms were placed around the wreckage, and in February 2012 salvage workers began removing more than 2,000 tons of fuel; the undertaking was completed the following month.
